Here are some dogs and cats I worked on Pigeon Simulator! We intended for them to act as quest givers and interactable NPCs throughout the game. I set up each with a quadruped ragdoll in Unity and created a handful of custom 3D alpha brushes to sculpt consistent fur that fit our style.
The workflow on these was slightly different from our human NPCs - originally, for the sake of time and efficiency we tried adjusting and re-texturing a set of third party animal base meshes. I wasn't totally satisfied with them as time went on, so I did a fresh sculpting/modeling pass on each and made some major topology edits to address some anatomical inaccuracies and make them more appealing. I'm happy with the final product - they feel like they fit in with the rest of our characters.
